To accommodate the planned expansion a direct road link from Mossend Railhead to the motorway and trunk road network is essential to avoid the adverse consequences of increasing traffic levels on the local road network.
The expansion of Mossend will create the opportunity to divert long distance freight movement from the motorway and trunk road network onto rail in accordance with Government Policy on sustainable transport thereby contributing to a significant reduction in Co2 emissions.
The provision of the new access link onto the A8 east of Shawhead will remove HGV traffic from the local road network within Bellshill improving the safety and environment for residents. The main access road will be constructed and brought into use to coincide with the opening of the M8/A8 Improvement Scheme in 2017/18.
