Update: Proposals for a new International Railfreight Terminal at Mossend in Bellshill have been given the seal of approval by Scottish Ministers. For more information visit the news page.

A planning application for Mossend International Railfreight Park has now been submitted to North Lanarkshire Council and can be viewed here – planning application no. 13/02079/PPP

The traffic effects of the proposed development have been assessed in consultation with Transport Scotland & North Lanarkshire Council. An environmental assessment including EIA scoping has been completed and submitted as part of the planning application.

The Environmental Assessment covers a range of topics including:

  • Geology, Soils and Land Use
  • Ecology and Nature Conservation
  • Water Environment
  • Noise and Vibration
  • Air Quality
  • Landscape & Visual
  • Community Effects – Pedestrians, Cyclists, Amenity
  • Cultural Heritage
  • Construction Impacts

To accommodate the planned expansion a direct road link from Mossend Railhead to the motorway and trunk road network is essential to avoid the adverse consequences of increasing traffic levels on the local road network.
The expansion of Mossend will create the opportunity to divert long distance freight movement from the motorway and trunk road network onto rail in accordance with Government Policy on sustainable transport thereby contributing to a significant reduction in Co2 emissions.

The provision of the new access link onto the A8 east of Shawhead will remove HGV traffic from the local road network within Bellshill improving the safety and environment for residents. The main access road will be constructed and brought into use to coincide with the opening of the M8/A8 Improvement Scheme in 2017/18.
